The Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum stands as a vital institution committed to preserving historical truth and fostering a culture of human rights. We believe that by confronting the painful realities of the past, we can collectively work towards a future where such atrocities are never repeated. Our view is rooted in several core principles:
Firstly, we are dedicated to honoring the memory of every victim of the Red Terror. Each life lost represents an immeasurable tragedy, and it is our solemn duty to ensure their stories are told and their sacrifices are recognized. We aim to humanize the statistics, reminding visitors that behind every number was an individual with a family, hopes, and dreams.
Secondly, we strive to educate and inform. The museum serves as a critical educational resource, particularly for younger generations who may not have lived through this period. By presenting factual accounts and tangible evidence, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Red Terror’s causes, events, and profound consequences. We believe that an informed citizenry is the first line of defense against future abuses of power.
Thirdly, we advocate for justice and accountability. While the past cannot be undone, acknowledging the crimes committed and remembering those responsible is crucial for healing and preventing recurrence. Our exhibits serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked power and the importance of democratic values and the rule of law.
To preserve the memory of the victims of the Red Terror, educate the public on the atrocities committed, and promote human rights and justice in Ethiopia.
A society where the lessons of the past are learned, human rights are universally respected, and peace and reconciliation prevail.
