As the Derg took control, a chilling atmosphere enveloped the nation. Mengistu Haile Mariam, a previously unknown figure, emerged as the leader of this new regime. He painted himself as a champion of the people, yet his vision for Ethiopia quickly morphed into a nightmare. Under the guise of Marxism-Leninism, the Derg sought to reshape society through fear and oppression.
In the early years of the regime, the Derg initiated a campaign known as the Red Terror. They claimed to target enemies of the state, but in reality, anyone who dared to question their authority found themselves in grave danger. The promises that once filled the air with hope turned to dust as the streets that echoed with music and laughter grew silent, replaced by whispers of fear.
Families were torn apart as neighbors turned against each other. Friends who had shared meals and dreams now eyed one another with suspicion. The government’s militia roamed freely, empowered to enforce the regime’s will. They would storm homes at night, dragging away anyone deemed a threat, often never to return. The cries of mothers echoed through the streets as they searched for their lost sons and daughters. The Derg’s violence became a dark shadow over Ethiopia, with thousands disappearing into the night. The once vibrant tapestry of Ethiopian society began to fray, replaced by a chilling silence.
